On Netflix: Moana (2016)

“In Ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the Demigod Maui reaches an impetuous Chieftain’s daughter’s island, she answers the Ocean’s call to seek out the Demigod to set things right.” – imdb.com

Disney’s Moana.
Finally I got around to see this.

Fun fact:
Some places in Europe her name was changed to Vaiana. Why you ask? Because apparently there’s a porn star named Moana, and they couldn’t have the audience being confused, obviously! OK, there are other stories of why it was changed, but this is the one I find most entertaining, aka, it must be the truth!

I love Disney films, and I’ve heard a lot of good things about this film but never got to see it in the cinema, so when I saw it was released on Netflix I was just like UUUHYEAH!

I’m all for girl power films, and this is definitely one of those. Moana is a strong willed girl who stands out from the crowd. They want to be safe, while she is thriving for adventure and exploring the unknown. However, she is the daughter of the chief of the Island and her job is to follow him and lead the people like they’ve done for years. One day the fish disappear and Moana, after talking to her awesomely crazy Grandma, realise she IS the Chosen One, the one who will take Te Fiti’s heart to Maui and release the curse (this may make no sense, but the film begins with the story of how the Demi-God: Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti and it cursed the ocean, the only way to reverse it is to get the heart back to Te Fiti). Moana ends up going on this trip, despite her father saying no, because she has to save the people.

I honestly kind of related to Moana as I’ve had to cross the sea to follow my dreams too. She wants to explore the unknown, she felt drawn to things the other islanders don’t seem to get. She has a dream, and she will do anything for it. I also really like the Maui character, he’s such a man. So arrogant and full of himself, and Moana wins him over by feeding his ego. The grandma is also awesome, I love crazy people, and she’s a crazy one, or she’s different cause she doesn’t care what others think, in other words: the way to be!

I think this film is a great adventure, and has some good music, particularity the “How Far Will I Go?” song.. it speaks to my heart! I love this song, cause it basically says that you don’t know how far you’ll be able to get, if you don’t try, which I think is a great message to kids and everyone with a dream:
“See the light where the sky meets the sea
It calls me
No one knows how far it goes
If the wind in my sail on the sea stays behind me
One day I’ll know
If I go there’s just no telling how far I’ll go”.

I think this is a film every girl should see! 🙂
